Meet the team
We are looking for intercambio & activity organizers
These are not full-time jobs, but a fun & social job for either 2.5 hours or 4 hours a week. These roles are ideal to complement studies or other work…whilst socializing and networking and having a good time….also looks good on a CV !
Intercambio organizers “work” 2.5 hours a week, or alternate weeks. We are currently looking for someone to do Tuesday and or Thrusday intercambios.
Activity organizers do “once-off” weekend activities. Everything from the research, planning, to the posting and…if you want to, accompanying the group on the activity.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AN INTERCAMBIO ORGANISER?
In Spanish you’d be described as a “dinamizador/a”, in English I suppose the word would be “facilitator”. The role is to:
1. Prepare venue for intercambio, 2.. Greet members, write out name tags and collect payment, 3. Put members in bilingual groups of 4-5, 4. Make “first timers” feel welcome, introduce them to regulars etc… 5. Go round tables ensuring that group dynamics are working and correct them where they are not (ie: sitting down yourself to get conversation started, make any adjustments you see fit) 6. Liaise with bar owners
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF AN ACTIVITY ORGANISER?
The role of an activity organizer can vary depending on your interests. You can research the activity, only lead it, or research and lead it. Talk with Germaine first.
Tasks include:
1. Research activity, 2. Contact the person/destination/entity we would visit to arrange a date, time and terms of the visit. 3. Complete the “Suggest and Activity” form on our website and monitor interest. 4. Greet members, & collect any outstanding payments 5. Lead group to destination 6. Liaise with person / destination / entity.
WHAT PROFILE ARE YOU LOOKING FOR & WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS?
We will give preference to existing members as they know how it all works and other members will know them too.
- Personality: First and foremost, you must be a social, friendly person who has the ability to get people talking to one another and enjoying themselves. You need to have great PR skills and be able to manage groups of people. If you do not, don’t consider this role. It is not for you.
- Language: Ideally you will be fluent in English with at least conversational Spanish. We would prefer a native (or near native) English speaker. It’s not essential but you must be able to communicate in English on all levels. You must also have acceptable Spanish.
- Honesty: Finally, you need to be honest and trustworthy.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
- Social & networking: This should be (and usually becomes) the most rewarding aspect of the “job”. You meet a lot of people of all ages, all backgrounds, all walks of life. ALL organizers who have benefitted socially and some professionally from being organizers at our intercambios.
- Financial compensation: Money should not be the main motivation and the right person for the job will find all the requirements completely natural. We pay 15€ per intercambio. The role is great for students or people who have “regular jobs” but just want to do something in the evening…and get paid for it! In many ways, it should be a great job for the right candidate.
That’s all,
Any questions, talk to Germaine in person at one of the intercambios!
GERMAINE (Founder and organiser)
Germaine’s life has always revolved around travel, combining language learning with cultural learning. A native Australian and an avid language learner, Germaine grew up in Spain whilst attending a French school and speaking English at home. Then, after studying Japanese, she lived in Tokyo for 2 years. It is here where she first started teaching English.
These first hand experiences triggered the desire to recreate the positive atmosphere she encountered during her travels and life experience…so after obtaining a TEFL qualification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), and ample teaching experience, she created the English Oasis.
Where and when: Germaine can usually be found at Bar Borneo on Thursdays from 8pm-10pm taking care of the busy English / Spanish intercambio AND together with Bruno and others, organizing our “French Corner”.

JOSEP: (Intercambio Organiser)
Hello! I am a Catalan guy in my mid twenties who has spent most of his life in the lovely city of Barcelona, lately I spent a year in The Netherlands and while attempts at learning some Dutch were not entirely successful it sure has helped to polish my English with people from all over the world.
I am a native Spanish and Catalan speaker, and fluent in English. I love to try to learn other languages but unfortunately I am a big fan of doing too many things at the same time and consistency is not usually my best suit.
While I have a degree in psychology and I’ve spent some time working in Human Resources, I decided to swap careers a while ago and now I have a degree in Market Research and currently working in Online Marketing.
My biggest hobbies are movies and live rock music, and I am an avid fan of Science Fiction and black humour in general. Right now I am still trying to figure out what to do with my life which never ceases to be quite a challenge.
I love meeting new people from different cultural backgrounds and learning new things from other points of view, especially if some beers are involved.
Where and when: Josep organizes Wednesdays Intercambos at Cafe Salambo. You can find him there from 7pm-9pm.
